MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY honors the life and legacy of one of the most recognized heroes of the Civil Rights Movement in American history.

It is a day of remembrance of the life and legacy of a man of faith and action. Dr. King saw a world of possibilities and invited people to bring them into reality by taking concrete action.

It was in Houston back in 1960, that Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was initially inspired to follow his dream of civil rights when the first sit-in to protest desegregated lunch counters was staged by Texas Southern University students.

In honor of Dr. King, his contributions, and his connection to Houston, here are 9 area events you can attend on MLK Day.

 

  • 45th Annual MLK Parade and Festival Downtown Houston. This family-friendly event will feature plenty of art, music, and performances.
  • The parade will start on the corner of Smith and Lamar. Go HERE to get all the info.
  • MLK Festival at Houston Civic Hall. In front of City Hall Downtown, the festival begins immediately following the 45th Annual MLK Parade.
  • The 2023-MLK Grande Parade will be held in Midtown, originating on San Jacinto Street & Elgin Street beginning at 10am. Click HEREfor parade details.
  • The 29th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Celebration in The Woodlands takes place at noon on 1/16. Go HEREto learn more.
  • MLK Day of Service in Kemah is a day of cleaning up the community and connecting with other families in nature. Students will do some community service, go on a hike and enjoy a picnic in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Link for info HERE.
  • Dream Big WonderWeek! Celebrate the life of one of America’s greatest leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr at the Children’s Museum Houston. Click HERE to learn how you can join in inspiring activities celebrating the life and legacy of this great leader.
  • MLK Jr. Dream Catcher Bike Ride starts at 8am on Clay Street. This 20-mile bike ride allows participants to see the stops Dr. King made during his final trip to Houston.
