HALL-O-STEAM Promotes Spooky Science Fun Across Greater Houston’s Centers of Excellence

Articles Media

Collaborative for Children invited its Centers of Excellence to take part in a thrilling seasonal challenge: HALL-O-STEAM, a contest that showcases how early learners can explore science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) through Halloween-themed play-based learning.

The goal? To inspire creativity, encourage hands-on exploration, and highlight the power of STEAM-based curriculum in early childhood education. Participating centers submitted photos of their Collab Kids engaging in spooky experiments, pumpkin projects, and imaginative fall activities. From counting spider legs to building “spooky” robots, the entries were a testament to the innovation happening inside our certified child care centers across Greater Houston.

Why STEAM Matters in Early Childhood Education

STEAM learning in early childhood builds foundational skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration. When paired with seasonal themes like Halloween, it becomes even more engaging for young minds. Research shows that children exposed to STEAM concepts early are more likely to develop curiosity and confidence in science and math later in life.

Collaborative for Children’s Centers of Excellence are uniquely positioned to deliver high-quality STEAM experiences. These certified centers follow a rigorous curriculum, offer trained educators, and prioritize developmental milestones that prepare children for kindergarten and beyond.

Francois Academy Wins with “Ghost Bubbles and Hollow Steam”

This year’s HALL-O-STEAM winner is Francois Academy, a proud Center of Excellence located in Greater Houston. Their submission stood out for its creativity, educational value, and sheer joy captured in every photo.

“Our friends had a blast during today’s science experiment Ghost Bubbles and HALL-O-STEAM! Dressed in lab coats and goggles, our young scientists explored how dry ice and warm water react to create fog-filled bubbles. The excitement was priceless as they observed the ‘ghostly’ bubbles form, float, and pop into puffs of mist.

This hands-on activity helped strengthen observation skills, cause-and-effect understanding, and sensory exploration!  All while keeping science fun and engaging!”

Francois Academy’s experiment exemplifies how certified ECE training and curriculum can turn everyday moments into powerful learning experiences. Their win includes:

– 50 passes to Dig World

– $200 gift certificate to Sloomoo Institute for slime-making fun

– 50 passes to Meow Wolf Houston, an immersive art experience for families

Supporting STEAM at Home

Parents play a vital role in nurturing STEAM learning outside the classroom. Simple activities like measuring ingredients while baking, building with blocks, or exploring nature can reinforce classroom concepts. Collaborative for Children offers resources and guidance to help families bring early childhood education into their homes in meaningful ways.

Differentiating from Drop-In Daycare Facilities

Unlike drop-in daycare centers, Collaborative for Children’s Centers of Excellence are certified to deliver structured, developmentally appropriate learning experiences. These centers emphasize curriculum, educator training, and measurable outcomes that ensure that children are not just cared for, but truly prepared for lifelong learning.
